When
your bait arrives, it will be packaged inside a cooler which is placed
inside a cardboard box. Your leeches will be inside a plastic bag with
plenty of oxygen and enough water for a 2 day shipment. We also include
an ice bottle to make the bait extra comfortable.
Here
is a quick video of how we package the leeches:
Once
the bait arrives, it will be your responsibility to place it in your
own container. If you have been using leeches or crawlers for some
time, you will know what to do. However, here are some tips and tricks
to help you out - just in case.
Additionally,
your shipment will include a small sheet of paper including live bait
care instructions.
Leeches
should be removed from their shipping container and placed in a live
bait bucket of your choosing. You will need to place them in fresh
water.
Be
sure the water is chlorine and fluoride free.
Check
the temperature of the leeches, be sure not to shock them by placing
them in water that is TOO COLD. Drastic temperature changes are hard on
leeches. You will want to gradually lower the temperature to ensure
liveliness.
Night
Crawlers will do best if you add Peat Moss when the shipment is
received.
If
you keep Night Crawlers for 2 to 3 weeks, transfer to fresh, slightly
dampened
peat moss or Buss Worm Bedding.
Should
you use Buss Worm Bedding, please follow instructions on the
container.
Store
in shallow plastic or styrofoam containers and refrigerate at 40 - 50
Degrees.

In
the unfortunate circumstance that your bait does not arrive alive, you
must contact us within 24 Hours. Please email: mark@jewelloutdoors.com
for a replacement order.
As
soon as you open your box containing leeches, you need to get them out
of the plastic bag, into fresh water. IMPORTANT: Water containing
chlorine or fluoride is not good for leeches. We recommend the use of
well water, bottled water, or distilled water.
Notify
within 24 Hours if the shipment perished during travel.
Do
NOT shock the leeches. This means, don't change the temperature on them
too fast. Feel the temperature of the leeches with your hand. Be sure
the water your replace them into is not drastically colder. Get them in
cool (but not icy) water, place them in the refrigerator, and let them
sit.
How
often should I change the water on leeches? We recommend changing the
water on them at least once every two days for optimal care.
Whether
it is leeches or crawlers, you should not handle them very much. Yes,
we know its fun to dare your friends to stick one on their tongue, but
the overall liveliness of your bait will not be as good.
Do
you need to feed leeches or crawlers? No, they can survive a long time
as long as you keep them cool, change water or bedding, and remove any
dead ones.
Provide
a shipping address where you will be located during the work day! If
UPS drops off your bait during the day, and they sit on your porch or
step in the sun, IT WILL DIE.
How
much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free in the midwest, and typically runs around $32 for
states outside the midwestern U.S. As we add other live bait, or
additional products you will be made aware of any additional shipping
charges. Click Here
